Traditional cultivars and rare botanical species
The outdoor collection of Plumeria rubra (Pomelia or Frangipani), the flowering plant symbol of the city of Palermo, consists of some thirty specimens.
The specimens arranged along Viale Riccobono, on either side of the Succulent Greenhouse, are traditional cultivars with flowers ranging from white, yellow and red to a mixture of these in the “Tricolor” cultivar.
In the Winter Garden (Serra Carolina), some rare botanical species are also housed, including Plumeria stenopetala, P. stenophylla, and P. pudica.
The Pomelia was introduced to Palermo in 1821, at the old Botanical Garden of Boccadifalco.
